Volunteerism at it’s Best!

VAC is very Grateful to the

GE Volunteers and Team Depot

Last August Tropical Storm Irene left the Sheldon Academy in total ruins but with the help of many donations and volunteers the school is nearly ready for operation again.

Along with a grant from the GE Foundation for $14,800, the local GE volunteer group came in and installed a new kitchen in the Culinary Arts Program and painted every classroom and office space.

GE Volunteers at VAC 2012

This still left us with the need for new flooring and no funds. Cheryl McKenzie, VAC’s new Director of Programs, went to our local Home Depot and requested their help, as a result we submitted a grant request for $8,500 to be used for flooring in the Sheldon Academy. Not only were we fortunate enough to receive the grant, it came with about 40 volunteers; employees from various Home Depot stores. These volunteers came in on the weekend of August 18th and 19th to install the flooring. VAC is very grateful for the support we have received from the community. This support has enable us to fulfil our mission for over 75 years; “When families thrive, communities succeed”.

Volunteer Opportunities

VAC offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. These opportunities may include helping in our classrooms, serving food in the cafeteria and helping with planning activities, or assisting with special events.
